Product Description of: Jumbo Organic Sauerkraut Natural
In the past, the sauerkraut was pickled in wooden barrels of 200 liters. The transport was done by ships and in severe frost the barrels were simply rolled over the ice to the nearest train station.
The history of sauerkraut
The rich history of the sauerkraut goes back to the Tatars (a Mongolian equestrian people) who discovered sauerkraut. To make it easier to transport white cabbage, it was finely chopped and taken in saddlebags. To their surprise, after a few weeks it turned out that the sliced white cabbage had become pleasantly sour in taste. The sweaty horse backs against the saddlebags with the sliced white cabbage provided a natural fermentation and the sauerkraut was discovered!
