Dutch rusk

Rusk is a well-known breakfast product in the Netherlands. It goes especially well with a light breakfast. The round, over a centimeter thick disc, "dry" bread is very easy to digest. It is somewhat like toasted bread but not the same. Rusk is baked twice. The first time it goes into the oven as a biscuit roll. Then the bulb is cut in half and baked one more time. A rusk is nice and light.

Rusk with mice

Besides a breakfast product, rusk is also a festive treat. Eating rusk with mice when a baby is born is a typical Dutch habit. When the maternity visitor comes by, the man often stands in the kitchen, greasing biscuits. Rose with white mice when a girl is born and blue and white mice when a boy is born. The birth should always be celebrated with a treat. A handy tip to quickly and easily provide the rusks with mice: shake a plate or bowl full of mice, spread the rusk well with butter and dip the butter-smeared side in the mice. For example, the entire surface is well filled with mice. The mice immediately stick well to the rusk. This way you do not scatter the entire kitchen when making rusk with mice.
