History St. Nicholas

The origin of St. Nicholas historically has its roots in Turkey. Saint Nicholas would have been the bishop of Myra. Because of the many good deeds he would have done, he was canonized. Over time, all kinds of legends have arisen about this person and his good deeds. The tasty St. Nicholas sprinkles would come from giving money to poor people. His faithful help zwarte piet would be a slave orphan from Africa, who after his release continued to help Saint Nicholas as a thank you.

Since the 13th century, the Sinterklaas festival has been celebrated in Western Europe. Around the Middle Ages, certain poor children were given food and gifts on the day before the holiday. Later St. Nicholas became more and more a tradition, with St. Nicholasmarkets to the development where it has become a family circle tradition. After the Second World War, parcel evening was introduced, this was made possible by the increasing prosperity. Since then we have been enjoying all the good that St. Nicholas has to offer year after year.
